Tornado touches down in Reno County
May 18, 2025

Emergency responders, utility crews and public works are actively assessing the aftermath of the touchdown of a powerful tornado on May 18. The tornado first touched down at 11:50 p.m. moving through rural portions of the county north of Turon. It moved on the town of Plevna where it damaged several homes, trees and utility poles. It continued to cause destruction five miles north and east of Plevna before dissipating.
Residents are urged to take the following precautions:
- Avoid affected areas to allow emergency crews to conduct operations. Only residents will be allowed in the affected areas.
- Do not drive around barricades. Law enforcement have set up the barricades for your safety. If you encounter a roadway with a powerline across it, turn around and call 911.
- Report downed power lines or gas leaks to 911 immediately.
- Do not attempt to drive through debris-covered roads.
- Avoid entering damaged buildings until they are declared safe.
- Check on your neighbors.
“We are thankful the residents took shelter immediately when the tornado warnings were issued,” Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar said in a statement. “While the damage is extensive, we are relieved that no injuries or fatalities have been reported.”
The Red Cross has set up an assistance center at the Abbyville Community Center to support those affected.
“We continue to be proud of the way our residents, volunteers, responders, public works, and utility crews all work together,” Weishaar said. “The community’s resilience and cooperation will ensure that Reno County recovers quickly.”
