Sen. Michael Murphy weighs in

People often talk of federal government grants and programs and how important it is that Kansas gets “it’s share.” Consider this: during the 2024 fiscal year taxpayers were on the hook for $1.13 trillion in interest on the debt. That’s nearly $7,400 for each of the 153 million people who file tax returns. That’s an average, of course, and high earners will pay a lot more than low earners.

Nonetheless, American taxpayers in general are paying hundreds of dollars per year—and some pay many thousands per year—just to keep the federal government from defaulting on its debt. In many cases that’s money paid out for past lost wars and countless welfare boondoggles demanded and supported by today’s senior citizens and by Americans long dead.

The more the deficits and debt increase, the more tax revenue will be funneled into paying interest on government spending of the past. That’s $1.13 TRILLION that goes to creditors, not to any program or grant or road or bridge. Not only does the federal government need to gets its spending reduced and eliminate the deficit, each state must also learn to operate within its own tax receipts.

So many who complain about taxes do not support cuts to services that would lower those taxes. This is not sustainable folks! This is the primary reason I am sponsoring legislation for transactional gold and silver.

I’d hoped Kansas could lead the way, but Arkansas, Florida and Utah beat us to it…however getting it done is more important than being first. The inflation driven by government deficit spending is financially killing the average family. Understand that in 1970 an hourly wage of $1.50 in 6 silver quarters is worth $39.41 today. This is what all the “free government services” has cost the average person. Are you fed up enough to put our state on a diet? And stay tuned, I am working on property taxes as well.
