June 16, 2025

Jackson Legg drove in three runs, including a two-run homer, and Ethan Giesbrecht pitched six strong innings as the Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Great Bend Bat Cats 9-5 Saturday night at Hobart-Detter Field.
The victory improved Hutchinson to 9-1 on the season before a crowd of 570 fans, the eighth-largest in franchise history.
Giesbrecht (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk over six innings. Carson Bougher (0-1) took the loss for Great Bend, giving up five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.
The Monarchs struck early with a three-run third inning. Legg delivered an RBI single to score J Herrmann, then AJ Mustow followed with a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
Legg extended the advantage to 5-2 in the fifth with his two-run blast over the fence. Great Bend cut the deficit to 6-3 in the seventh on an RBI single by Peanut Brazzle, but Hutchinson answered with three runs in the eighth inning.
The Monarchs capitalized on Great Bend's control issues in the decisive eighth, taking advantage of a hit batter, walk, wild pitch and fielder's choice to break the game open.
Both teams were hit by pitches frequently throughout the contest, with five Hutchinson batters and two Great Bend players struck during the game.
Elias Leon added an RBI single for the Bat Cats in the ninth before Aiden Sowers closed out the victory for the Monarchs.
The game doubled as Cancer Awareness Night, adding special meaning to one of the season's best atmospheres at Hobart-Detter Field.
