Monarchs defeat Islanders 8-1 behind Harrell's pitching; tonight's game cancelled due to weather

KINGMAN, Kan. (AP) — Carson Harrell struck out six batters over 3.2 innings to lead the Hutchinson Monarchs to an 8-1 victory over the Kingman Islanders on Monday night at Islander Field.

Harrell allowed one run on four hits to earn the win for Hutchinson. The Monarchs' bullpen held Kingman scoreless the rest of the way.

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Luke Clayton drove in Hayden Oviatt with a single to center field.

Hutchinson tied the game in the second inning on Jarrett Herrmann's RBI double that scored Blake Bradford. Herrmann added a two-run double in the fourth inning, bringing home AJ Mustow and Bradford to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead.

The Monarchs pulled away with three runs in the fifth inning, including a run-scoring fielder's choice by Tyler Mitchell. Hutchinson added single runs in the sixth and ninth innings.

Cooper Tannahill took the loss for Kingman, allowing six runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out eight and walked three.

The victory improved Hutchinson's record to 10-2.

The Monarchs were forced to reschedule their game scheduled for this evening. They had this to say via social media: "Good afternoon. Due to the continued forecast for extremely strong storms tonight we are going to cancel tonight's game and reschedule it for a later date. Safety for our fans, players and staff must always come first.Thank you and we look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night when we host the Junction City Brigade at 7:00."
