Monarchs Crush Rebels 13-2 in Season Opener

The Hutchinson Monarchs launched their 2025 season in dominant fashion Saturday night, dismantling the Newton Rebels 13-2 at Hobart-Detter Field behind a powerful offensive display. AJ Mustow led the charge with three RBIs and a triple, while Tyson Vassart launched a towering two-run homer as the Monarchs collected 13 runs on 11 hits to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Hutchinson seized control early and never relinquished it, building momentum from the opening frame when Bryce Bradford's sacrifice fly tied the game at 1-1 after Jay Spafford tagged up to score. Mustow immediately answered with an RBI triple to center field, giving the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage they would never surrender. The second inning proved decisive as Hutchinson exploded for five runs, capped by Vassart's booming home run to right field that extended the lead to 5-1 and effectively put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Carson Harrell earned his first victory of the season for the Monarchs, working 2 1/3 innings while allowing two runs and striking out three batters. Though he issued four walks in the early-season outing, Harrell provided enough stability to allow Hutchinson's offense to take control. Newton's Brayden Rose absorbed the loss after surrendering eight runs on five hits, as the Rebels fell to 0-2 and struggled to mount any sustained offensive pressure against the Monarchs' pitching staff.

The Monarchs will look to maintain their early-season momentum when they return to Hobart-Detter Field on Monday, June 2nd at 7:00 PM to host the Derby Twins. With their balanced attack of disciplined hitting and solid pitching already on display, Hutchinson appears poised for another strong campaign in the competitive Jayhawk Collegiate League as they defend their status as one of the premier summer collegiate programs in Kansas.
