Mentoring Program Volunteers Support Hutchinson Zoo Conservation Efforts

Volunteers from Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County spent recent weeks assisting with conservation projects at the Hutchinson Zoo, combining community service with mentorship activities.

The organization's "Bigs" and "Littles" participated in hands-on volunteer work at the zoo, including maintenance of animal exhibits and facility improvements. The collaborative effort provided mentoring pairs with opportunities to work together while supporting local wildlife conservation.

"Our matches assisted in the reptile exhibit, learning and lending a hand together," the organization said in a social media post. "We love seeing our Bigs and Littles making a difference side by side in the community."

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters creates one-to-one mentoring relationships between adult volunteers and youth ages 5 to 25 who face various challenges. The organization serves young people dealing with issues related to self-confidence, friendships, school or family situations.

The Hutchinson Zoo, located at 6 Emerson Loop East in Carey Park, regularly partners with community organizations for volunteer projects. The facility focuses on education, conservation and recreation for Reno County residents.

Volunteer activities at the zoo included habitat maintenance, exhibit improvements and educational program support. The projects allowed mentoring pairs to engage in meaningful community service while strengthening their relationships.

The mentoring organization's mission centers on igniting "the power and promise of youth" through supportive adult relationships. Participants can remain matched through age 25, with the goal of helping young adults achieve financial independence by that age.

Community partnerships like the zoo collaboration provide structured activities for mentoring pairs while addressing local needs. The organization encourages both individual and group volunteer opportunities throughout Reno County.
