Local electrical company honored for community service, quality standards

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A Hutchinson electrical contracting company that donates full home rewiring services to families in need has been recognized with the local chamber of commerce's monthly small business award.
Service Plus Electrical Solutions received the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce June Small Business Award for its commitment to quality service and community involvement, officials announced this week.
Founded seven years ago by Steven Brown, the company has built its reputation on transparent pricing and detailed workmanship, including using drop cloths and cleaning equipment to leave job sites cleaner than before arrival.
"We're not just fixing wires," Brown said. "We're rebuilding confidence in what great service looks like."
The six-person company specializes in complete home rewiring projects, addressing electrical hazards before they become safety risks. Service Plus has grown to include four full-time employees and co-owners who share Brown's vision of intentional business growth.
The company's charitable arm, "Spread the Light," funds complete electrical rewiring for Reno County families who cannot afford the work. The program is supported through donations collected during the company's Safe Home Surveys, free electrical safety inspections offered to homeowners.
"Donations from these surveys go entirely to the company's charitable program," according to chamber officials. The initiative has provided thousands of dollars worth of electrical work to local families at no cost.
Service Plus also invests in workforce development through partnerships with Hutchinson Community College, offering apprenticeship opportunities alongside employee benefits including paid leave, career advancement support, and referral bonuses.
The business model reflects a broader trend among small contractors focusing on service quality and community engagement to differentiate themselves in competitive markets.
"At the end of the day, it's about taking care of one client, one home, at a time," Brown said. "With care and excellence—that's what we're here to do."
The chamber's monthly Small Business Award recognizes local companies that contribute to economic vitality and community development in the Hutchinson area. Previous recipients have included businesses across various industries, from retail to professional services.
Service Plus continues to operate throughout Reno County, offering residential and commercial electrical services while maintaining its commitment to charitable work and employee development.
Chamber officials said the award highlights how small businesses can create positive community impact while building sustainable operations.
In addition, the Chamber welcomed Account Manager with RK Black Wichita Blake Renner the as a new member. RK Black provides managed print services, including copier sales and leasing, as well as IT services.
"We're excited to have Blake and the RK Black team as part of our business community," Chamber officials said.
