Hutchinson Schools continue summer maintenance, meal programs during break

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Schools are using the summer break to complete major maintenance projects and continue serving thousands of free meals to local children.
USD 308 is conducting deep cleaning of all classrooms and tackling significant maintenance work across the district while students are away, according to Director of Communications Stacy Goss.
"It's not just cleaning desks — we're deep-cleaning, fixing, painting, upgrading. The work never really stops," Goss said.
Major Projects Underway
Don Michael Field will be closed June 23 through July 3 for track repainting. The district is asking community members to stay off the well-used field during the closure.
Ferris Elementary is receiving a comprehensive renovation this summer, including new flooring, fresh paint and new blinds. The district rotates building improvements each summer, with Ferris selected as this year's focus.
Summer Meal Program
The district's free summer lunch program is serving children 18 and under with grab-and-go meals at multiple locations. No paperwork or income verification is required.
Last summer, USD 308 served more than 66,000 meals through the program, and officials expect similar numbers this year.
"If you've ever been on the fence about it, please come out. Every meal helps a family and helps support the program," Goss said.
Fall Preparations
Online enrollment for the upcoming school year opens July 11. The district plans to send reminders through email, text messages, social media and the district app.
Open houses will be scheduled closer to the start of the school year after summer maintenance projects are completed.
Athletics Recognition
Hutchinson High School's Terrell King will represent the Salthawks in this year's Shrine Bowl football game, alongside Coach Mike Vernon.
The district continues its year-round operations to maintain facilities and support students and families throughout the summer months, even as classrooms remain empty until the fall semester begins.
