Hutchinson Community Foundation Supports Local Garden Project, Honors Late Council Member
June 13, 2025

The Hutchinson Community Foundation announced its support for the Sylvia Helping Hands Community Garden project while honoring the memory of late Sylvia Mayor Gary Walker, a longtime advocate for community development.
The Fund for Reno County provided $2,460 to support the garden initiative through the Community Catalyst grant program as part of the 2025 Impact Cycle 1. The project has expanded the community garden at Sylvia's city building, adding five raised beds that produced vegetables harvested and distributed to residents through the city office and library.
"Through their project, Sylvia Helping Hands is increasing the size of the community garden at the City building," the foundation reported. "Because of the success and appreciation of the citizens, they are expanding the garden this summer."
The foundation also funded playground equipment at City Park through a separate $10,449 grant from the 2024 Fund for Reno County program. Foundation representatives Kari and Sarah visited the playground to see the impact of the investment firsthand.
The foundation honored Walker, who recently passed away, describing him as "a long-standing city council member and advocate for the well-being of his neighbors" who would have appreciated watching the community garden's growth. Walker's obituary is available through Minnis Chapel.
The Hutchinson Community Foundation, established in 1989, serves as "the heart of philanthropic giving in Reno County." The organization operates from 1 N. Main St. and can be reached at 620-663-5293 or through its website at hutchcf.org.
The foundation's Community Catalyst program continues to invest in projects that enhance resident pride, increase community connections and contribute to more vibrant and resilient communities where residents can thrive.
