Hutchinson Announces Multiple City Infrastructure Changes, Civic Opportunities
June 13, 2025

The city is implementing several infrastructure updates and civic initiatives this month, including traffic signal removals, playground maintenance and new volunteer opportunities for residents.
Beginning Sunday, the city will remove traffic signals at two downtown intersections on Washington Street — at Fourth Avenue and Avenue A — after determining the lights are no longer warranted. Public Works Director Cecil Weible told the City Council in February that removing unnecessary signals could reduce accident rates by approximately 24%.
The signals will be deactivated and bagged for a 60-90 day trial period, allowing officials to reverse the changes if problems arise. The removal will save the city approximately $2,900 annually in electrical and maintenance costs while avoiding $56,478 in required upgrades for each intersection. Traffic signals at Fourth Avenue and Walnut Street will remain due to visibility concerns.
Meanwhile, the playground at Orchard Park on 43rd Avenue east of Halstead Street closed Tuesday for scheduled surfacing repairs designed to improve safety and extend the facility's lifespan. The playground will remain closed for an additional 48 hours after repairs are completed to allow the new surface to cure properly.
The city is also seeking residents to serve on the Planning Commission, which advises on land use, zoning decisions and long-term planning efforts. Commission members are appointed by the mayor and may serve up to two three-year terms. The board meets twice monthly and plays a key role in shaping Hutchinson's future development.
City officials expressed appreciation for residents' patience during the infrastructure improvements and encouraged civic participation through the Planning Commission application process. Applications are available through the city's website.
