The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1400 block of North Monroe Street on May 16. Crews arrived at 1:21 a.m. to find a small single-story home engulfed in flames. Fire was also spreading from the front porch into the attic.
Firefighters first focused efforts on the outside before moving indoors. During the operation, search crews located two residents who had managed to get themselves to safety.
The fire appears to have originated on the exterior of the home, remains under investigation with the cause undetermined. One resident was evaluated by Reno County EMS for smoke inhalation and heat exposure. Additionally, one firefighter suffered a hand injury and was transported non-emergency to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Officials confirmed that the home was equipped with functioning smoke detectors, which may have played a crucial role in alerting the occupants in time.
