Schmidt, colleagues move to expand ban on terrorists entering United States
WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Derek Schmidt (KS-02) announced he has cosponsored H.R. 3926, the Terrorist Inadmissibility Codification Act. The legislation – originally introduced by Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) – would expand federal law to prohibit people belonging to or associated with multiple terrorist organizations from entering the United States.
“There is no good reason to allow anyone who is a member of, associated with, or supportive of a known terrorist organization into our country,” Congressman Schmidt said. “The groups we’re barring from entry differ in name and nationality but share the goal of harming Americans. I’m proud to cosponsor this commonsense legislation because Kansans deserve to feel confident their government is doing everything in its power to keep them safe and is required by law to do so no matter who is President.”
BACKGROUND
H.R. 3926, the Terrorist Inadmissibility Codification Act, amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to expand inadmissibility status to officers, officials, representatives, and spokesmen of Hamas, Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and Palestine Islamic Jihad. The legislation also applies this status to aliens who endorse or espouse terrorist activities conducted by any of these Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO). Despite every group listed being a designated FTO, the Palestine Islamic Jihad is the only organization listed by name in current law.
The legislation is also cosponsored by Congressmen Michael McCaul (TX-10) and Jefferson Van Drew (NJ-02).
