Derby Twins rally past Hutchinson in walk-off victory

DERBY, Kan. — The Derby Twins scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to defeat the Hutchinson Monarchs 9-8 in a Sunflower Collegiate League game at Panther Field.
Trailing 8-6 entering the final inning, Derby's comeback began with a leadoff double by M. Hamond that scored C. Scott. C. Richards then delivered the game-winning hit, a two-run single to left field that brought home Hamond and D. Craig.
The victory dropped Hutchinson to 9-2 in league play, ending the team's road winning streak at seven games.
Hutchinson appeared in control after building an 8-6 advantage through eight innings. The Monarchs scored four runs in the middle innings, including a two-run double by J. Knox in the fifth that gave them a 5-3 lead.
Knox drove in three runs for Hutchinson, while C. Grimes and T. Mitchell also contributed RBIs during a two-run seventh inning that extended the lead to 7-3.
Derby cut the deficit to 7-5 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before J. Knox scored on a wild pitch in the ninth to give Hutchinson what appeared to be a decisive 8-6 cushion.
The Twins jumped ahead 3-0 in the second inning on a two-run single by G. Cooley and a center field error that allowed two additional runs to score. C. Richards added an RBI groundout to cap the early scoring.
Hutchinson tied the game 3-3 in the fourth on RBI singles from Knox and O. Cross.
Hutchinson used four relief pitchers after taking a 7-3 lead in the seventh inning. Russell Copous took the loss for the Monarchs, while Ryan Koob earned the victory for Derby.
The game was originally scheduled for earlier in the season but was postponed due to wet field conditions in Derby.
