County Department of Aging to host dementia simulation experience

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Department of Aging will host an interactive dementia simulation experience Friday designed to help participants understand the daily challenges faced by people living with the condition.

The event, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. at the Department of Aging at 120 W. Avenue B, is part of the county's Community Collaboration Series. Nicole Stahl, a physical therapist assistant and community liaison with Specialized Homecare, will lead the session.

The program uses simulation tools and guided activities to allow participants to experience the confusion, frustration and sensory changes associated with dementia. Organizers said the experience aims to build empathy while providing practical caregiving strategies.

"This eye-opening experience helps people understand the needs of those living with dementia and teaches skills that can make a real difference in their daily lives," Stahl said.

The simulation is designed to give participants firsthand insight into the cognitive and physical challenges that dementia patients face, helping family members, caregivers and community members develop better understanding and support techniques.

The Reno County Department of Aging regularly hosts educational programs as part of its Community Collaboration Series, which focuses on aging-related topics and resources for residents and their families.

Additional information about the event and other Department of Aging programs is available by contacting the department at 120 W. Avenue B in Hutchinson.
