1. Missouri Activates National Guard While Kansas Opposes Trump Military Actions

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe activated the National Guard Thursday, declaring a state of emergency over anticipated civil unrest. The Republican governor targeted Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield ahead of Saturday's planned nationwide protests against President Trump's military parade in Washington D.C. Meanwhile, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly joined 20 states in an amicus brief supporting California's court challenge to Trump's federalization of that state's National Guard without gubernatorial coordination. Kelly criticized Trump's actions as a violation of states' rights and a threat to governors' authority over their National Guards, calling the move inconsistent with civilian control of the military.

2. "No Kings" Protests Planned Statewide, Including Topeka Rally

More than 1,500 protests are scheduled nationwide for June 14 as part of a "No Kings" day of action, including a rally at the Kansas Statehouse in Topeka. The Topeka Women's March and 50501 movement organized the local event to protest what they call "authoritarian excesses and corruption" of the Trump administration, with activists being bused in from Salina, Abilene, Junction City, Manhattan and the Kansas City area to join the demonstration.

3. Overland Park Senator Launches Bid for Kansas Governor

Kansas Sen. Cindy Holscher announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for governor Thursday, becoming the first well-known Democrat to enter the race. The Overland Park legislator said she wants to protect public schools and shield Kansas from "slash and burn policies" from Republicans at both federal and state levels, focusing on "kitchen table" issues after Democrats lost legislative seats in last year's election.

4. Body of Missing Overland Park Woman Found in Cowley County

The body of Jerry McConnell, an 81-year-old missing Overland Park woman, was discovered Wednesday on private property in Cowley County, approximately one mile from where her abandoned vehicle was found in late May. The Cowley County Sheriff's Office said conditions indicate McConnell died shortly after abandoning her vehicle, and her personal property was also recovered during the search.

5. Missouri Approves Stadium Funding as Chiefs, Royals Face Kansas Deadline

Missouri lawmakers Wednesday approved a funding package that could pay up to half the cost of new or upgraded stadiums for the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, countering Kansas' offer to use bonding programs for up to 70% of new stadium costs. With Jackson County residents having rejected a stadium sales tax in April 2024, both teams face a June 30 deadline to decide between competing offers from Kansas and Missouri before their current leases at Truman Sports Complex expire in 2031.
