The Harvey County Board of Commissioners is scheduled to vote Tuesday, Aug. 18, on whether to authorize the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition to participate in two federal lawsuits challenging Endangered Species Act regulations. The commission will consider supporting the coalition's legal actions against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — including a challenge to the agency's definition of "harm" to protected species, which the coalition argues restricts local land use. The authorization would come at no direct cost to the county.

Commissioners are also set to review appointments to the Harvey County Food and Farm Council.

In other business, the board will review a $223,149 warrant check that includes a $3,481 payment to the Community Crisis Response Team from the Opioid Settlement Fund.

Commissioners will also hear a monthly update from Sheriff Chad Gay. According to the sheriff's July 2026 statistical report, deputies conducted 667 traffic stops, issued 103 tickets and made 122 arrests.

The county jail reported an average daily population of 100 inmates during the month. The report also notes the sheriff's office drove 48,069 miles and spent $8,443 on 3,091 gallons of fuel.
