The proposed budget maintains a flat mill levy rate of 38.502\. Included in the budget is a planned 10-year, $11.61 million general obligation bond that will fund improvements to the wastewater treatment plant's headworks facility and cover the city's financial obligations for an upcoming water reuse project. --- ### City approves contract to finish door access project under budget GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved a $30,829 contract to finish the city's door access control system project for the information technology department. The project's original vendor mutually agreed to dissolve its contract with $42,700 remaining in the budget. Because the new contractor is the only regional vendor that supports the specialized equipment, the remainder of the project was not put out to bid. The security upgrade is expected to be completed approximately $11,800 under budget within the next six to eight weeks. --- ### Commission amends zoning to regulate microdata facilities GARDEN CITY, Kan. — In response to a nationwide influx of data centers, the city commission unanimously approved Ordinance 3052 to amend local zoning regulations regarding microdata facilities. The ordinance restricts such facilities to the I-3 heavy industrial district and limits them to single-story structures under 100,000 square feet. To proactively conserve local resources, the new rules cap a facility's electrical capacity at 10 megawatts unless granted a special contract by the city. The ordinance also mandates closed-loop cooling systems to significantly reduce water consumption. --- ### Southeast water tower scheduled for raising GARDEN CITY, Kan. — City officials announced that the new water tower in the southeast portion of Garden City will be raised on Thursday, Aug. 6\. The all-day event marks a major milestone in the city's water infrastructure development. Residents are encouraged to view the rare operation from a safe distance, and city staff will record video and photos for the public to watch on replay. --- ### Third Street expected to reopen by Friday following striping GARDEN CITY, Kan. — In response to public inquiries about ongoing road closures, city staff confirmed that Third Street is scheduled to reopen by Friday at the latest. The street department is finalizing lane striping on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the reopening. Commissioners also reminded residents to drive cautiously around street department crews, who are currently repainting crosswalks and school zones across the city in preparation for the start of the public school year. --- ### Finney County EMS reports increased call volume and facility updates FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. — Finney County Emergency Medical Services Director Skylar Swords presented a quarterly update to the commission, reporting a slight increase in calls from 1,024 in the first quarter to 1,045 in the second quarter. Swords noted that a newly implemented float position has improved scheduling across all three shifts and announced the recent hiring of a candidate to help fill remaining staff vacancies.
