The funds will cover the complete demolition and reconstruction of Taxiway A, replacing aging pavement that currently poses a foreign-object debris hazard to aircraft engines. The federal grants will cover 95 percent of the project's costs, with the city's 5 percent match funded through passenger facility charges. Construction is expected to span 160 days and will be phased to safely accommodate all aircraft, up to Boeing 737s, throughout the winter and spring. --- ### City denied federal grant for pedestrian crossings GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City's attempt to secure federal funding for two grade-separated pedestrian crossings near the city bypass has been denied. City staff announced that the application for the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development grant was identified as eligible and worthy of funding by the U.S. Department of Transportation, but ultimately did not make the final cut. This marks the second time the city has applied for the grant, expanding the recent application to include two crossings following the development of the STAR Bond District. Staff plans to meet with federal officials to gather feedback and improve future grant applications. --- ### Engineering contract approved for Fulton Street pavement restoration GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The city took the first step in a major 2028 infrastructure project by approving a $152,143 engineering design services agreement with Wilson and Company. The contract is part of the Kansas Department of Transportation City Connecting Link Improvement Program and will focus on concrete pavement restoration along Fulton Street and U.S. Route 50 Business, from Third Street to Washington Street. KDOT will fund 85 percent of the design phase, leaving the city to pay $22,821 from its material street repair account. --- ### Commission inks $5.7 million reimbursement for police relocation GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Commissioners unanimously approved a $5.74 million reimbursement agreement with Finney County to cover temporary relocation expenses for the Garden City Police Department and Finney County Sheriff's Office. Both agencies are moving to a temporary shared facility at 1210 Fleming St. while the existing Law Enforcement Center undergoes extensive renovations. Voters previously approved an $87.5 million county bond issue for the overall project, which covers the remodeling of the temporary site, access control, moving costs and limited furnishings. Renovation of the temporary space is expected to be completed by late October or early November. --- ### Fire department reports minor damages during 2026 fireworks season GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Garden City fire and police officials presented the annual Independence Day fireworks report, noting 53 reported violations and 25 warnings issued during the holiday season. Emergency crews responded to 12 fire calls — five of which were confirmed as fireworks-related — causing roughly $1,400 in minor damages to items like trash cans. The departments noted that heavy rain leading up to the holiday helped limit fire risks, and a social media campaign reaching nearly 250,000 contacts helped educate the public on permitted discharge times. --- ### Commission approves Main Street alcohol waiver for Fall Fest GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Attendees of the upcoming Fall Fest will be permitted to consume alcohol on Main Street following the commission's approval of a public consumption waiver. The event, organized by Downtown Vision, will take place Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The approval suspends a city ordinance to allow the possession and sale of cereal malt beverages and alcoholic liquor within the designated event area, aiming to boost attendance and support downtown revitalization efforts. --- ### High school football games to feature ceremonial cannon and aircraft landing GARDEN CITY, Kan. — Friday night lights at Garden City High School will feature some extra firepower this fall after the commission approved a pair of special event waivers. The commission approved a helicopter landing at the football field for the school's Sept. 11 Homecoming game. Additionally, commissioners unanimously approved a new request allowing the school to fire a single ceremonial cannon blast after every Garden City touchdown during all home games and potential home playoff games for the 2026 season. --- ### Commission proclaims day to honor Garden City Wind championship GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The commission officially proclaimed Aug. 10 as Garden City Wind Championship Celebration Day following the independent baseball team's first title win since its inception in 2015\. General manager Randy Ralston attended the meeting with the championship trophy, thanking the city for its continued support and noting that the final two playoff games were sold out with standing-room-only crowds.
