SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing overnight this weekend. Residents should take the following precautions to protect their homes and families:

**Home protection tips:**

**Drip faucets:** Let cold water drip from indoor faucets to prevent pipes from freezing.

**Open cabinet doors:** Allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

**Insulate pipes:** Use pipe insulation or towels to wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas like garages or crawl spaces.

**Seal drafts:** Check windows and doors for drafts and seal them to keep the cold out.

**Set thermostat:** Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night, no lower than 55 degrees.

**Know your shut-off valve:** In case of a burst pipe, know how to turn off your water supply quickly.

**Additional reminders:**

Bring pets indoors.

Check on elderly neighbors or those with limited mobility.

Avoid using open flames or stoves for heating.
