Hutchinson residents may have noticed taller grass than usual along the city's levees and drainage ditches this month as public works crews battle a series of equipment breakdowns.

The city's flood control areas and ditches are typically mowed twice a year, once in early May and again in late July. However, a higher-than-usual number of mechanical failures this summer has delayed the second round of maintenance. According to a [municipal update issued Wednesday](https://www.hutchinsonks.gov/city-news?contentId=83f5785b-cd93-4c42-a212-73c665a44417&viewAll=3919bd09-0ee0-437a-82c9-0f2caf5c158c&ref=citizenjournal.us), some repairs have taken longer than expected because the city is waiting on replacement parts to arrive.

Despite the setbacks, city crews are working through the late-summer mowing rotation, making steady progress each day on the overgrown areas. The mowing delays come during a demanding summer for Hutchinson's municipal workers, who also battled multiple simultaneous water main breaks across the city in late July.

Meanwhile, the center sections of some drainage ditches will remain unkempt a bit longer. Those areas are normally maintained by a specialized robotic mower that is currently out of service while the city waits for parts. Officials said those sections will be finished as soon as the automated machine is operational again.
