During a stop at Lindsborg, Kan.’s Bethany College Thursday, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Adam Hamilton spoke to a packed room of supporters on religion and caring for one’s neighbor.

Hamilton is in a tight race against incumbent Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS), who has been dogged with news investigations into his [medical debt collection practices](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/08/us/politics/roger-marshall-obgyn-doctor-debts.html?ref=citizenjournal.us) and his [use of taxpayer funds for campaigning purposes](https://www.citizenjournal.us/roger-marshalls-complicated-history-of-blurring-the-line-between-taxpayer-dollars-and-campaign-cash/). The race has received national attention after [several polls](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/polls/kansas-us-senate-election-polls-2026.html?ref=citizenjournal.us) showed Hamilton either statistically tied or ahead of Marshall.

In an interview with national press outlets and Citizen Journal after his speech, Hamilton said that although he believed religion had a role in this race, he also wasn’t running to force his religion on his potential constituents.

“I believe in the First Amendment, and I want to make sure that we are protecting the Constitution, but I do bring 38 years of pastoral experience, listening to people, caring for them, having empathy for them, \[and\] trying to solve problems,” Hamilton said. “That's what I bring to the table, and a deep sense of what's right and what's fair and what's just.”

Hamilton called himself a radical centrist, saying that on many issues, such as abortion, he wasn’t going to win the votes of those on the extreme sides of an issue.

“Not everything is gray,” Hamilton said. “There are things that are clearly black and white, but there's a lot of things where there's room for us to see, "I may not ever get to where you are, but I can see where you're coming from, and I can respect you for that, and I can still be in fellowship with you."

In his interview, Hamilton called for the Democratic Party to embrace people of faith, saying that Republicans have been using faith to manipulate potential voters.

“Jesus never talked about civil liberties, he never talked about fiscal responsibility, a strong defense, or limited government. But he did talk about, 'I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink,'” Hamilton said. “You can be a deeply committed Christian and be a Republican or a Democrat.”

If elected, Hamilton said that he would not support Chuck Schumer, who leads Democrats in the U.S. Senate, as Senate leader.

“I just think it's time for new leadership, time for younger leadership, time for, you know, fresh ideas. And in Kansas, Chuck Schumer's a liability, not an asset,” Hamilton said. “It’s also why I support term limits and age limits.”

Hamilton [has managed to set fundraising records](https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article316400124.html?ref=citizenjournal.us) during his campaign. The most recent filings from the Federal Election Commission show that Hamilton’s campaign raised more than $4 million since starting his campaign in February, in contrast to Marshall’s $3.2 million since January 2025.

“We've raised more money than any candidate, Republican or Democrat, in the history of Kansas in the first five months of the campaign,” Hamilton said. “And we've raised it from the people in Kansas and outside of Kansas, but from individuals. We don't take corporate PAC money.”

[Politico reported Friday afternoon](https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2026/10/09/congress/dems-push-into-kansas-01114520?ref=citizenjournal.us) that the Democratic-aligned Senate Majority PAC, [a super PAC](https://ballotpedia.org/Super%5FPAC?ref=citizenjournal.us), is planning to spend $5 million on the Kansas Senate race. A spokesperson for Hamilton’s campaign declined to comment about the newfound spending.

On his [opponent’s attacks on his faith](https://www.citizenjournal.us/vp-vance-sen-marshall-masterson-and-others-hold-rally-in-olathe/), Hamilton called Marshall desperate.

“If you're attacking somebody's faith, it says you're desperate. You're attacking, you know, some deep part of them, and it just so happens that that's 24,000 other people in my church that you're attacking,” Hamilton said.

Citizen Journal has reached out to the Marshall campaign to arrange an interview but has yet to receive a response.
