### Commission considers 'weekend clause' for fireworks sales

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — The Douglas County Commission directed staff to draft a text amendment that could introduce a "weekend clause" for local fireworks sales. While state law recently extended the seasonal sales window from June 20 to July 7, the commission opted to maintain its stricter July 1 through July 4 window to protect emergency resources. However, commissioners supported exploring a future provision that would allow vendors to open for a preceding weekend if the standard four-day window does not naturally include one, a calendar scenario that will first occur in 2029.

### First responders warn against extending fireworks window

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — Emergency officials strongly opposed any extension of the county's fireworks season during a presentation on potential code changes. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Chief Joe Hardy testified that the Fourth of July period places immense strain on volunteer fire crews, who must remain on high alert for structure and grass fires, as well as traumatic injuries. Douglas County Emergency Communications Center data revealed that 911 calls average 407 per day from July 2 to July 5, with an average of 103 firework-specific calls occurring on July 4 alone.

### County evicts unauthorized occupants to clear property for agricultural sale

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — Zoning officials are making headway in clearing an unauthorized encampment site located halfway between Lawrence and Eudora. Officials noted that following a Sept. 30 court decision, electricity to the units was shut off earlier this week, prompting several individuals to vacate the premises. The county is working to fully clear the property of the remaining occupants so the owner can safely sell the land for agricultural use. District 4 Commissioner Gene Dorsey, who represents the area, is currently running a write-in campaign for reelection in the upcoming November general election.
