A fire in the roof area of Morton Salt's main plant drew a mutual-aid call to two neighboring departments Tuesday, Oct. 20, but the South Hutchinson Fire Department's first crew quickly knocked it down, the department said.

According to the department's social media post, that crew reported a working fire on arrival, meaning one actively burning and needing a full firefighting response.

The department requested mutual aid from the Hutchinson Fire Department and Reno County Fire District 1\. Mutual aid is an arrangement in which neighboring departments send crews and equipment to help one another.

The department also called Reno County EMS for rehab, in which medics monitor and rest firefighters during a long incident.

Crews stayed several hours doing overhaul, pulling apart and checking materials for hidden hot spots so the fire does not rekindle, before returning to service.

The Hutchinson Fire Department answered the call a day after its firefighters stopped a basement fire in a three-story building on East Second Avenue in Hutchinson on Monday, Oct. 19.
