MANHATTAN, Kan. — Riley County residents will continue receiving free assistance with state health insurance applications following the commission's unanimous approval of a renewed agreement with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Sitting as the Board of Health, commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with the KDHE Division of Health Care Finance to provide presumptive eligibility and KanCare application assistance through May 31, 2029\. The program operates at no additional cost to the county and has processed 647 applications since 2022.

The commission also recognized two county employees for outstanding service. Paramedic William Dunn was honored as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Region 4 Paramedic of the Year. Assistant Emergency Medical Services Director Joshua Gering praised Dunn's 35-year career, highlighting his clinical competence, calm presence and dedication to mentoring the next generation of emergency medical technicians.

Additionally, Assistant County Attorney John Griffin was formally recognized after being named the Kansas Narcotics Prosecutor of the Year by the Kansas Narcotics Officers Association.
