CHS Inc., the nation's largest farmer-owned cooperative, said Monday, Sept. 14, it will spend about $700 million on a Wisconsin soybean crush plant to add domestic demand for a crop caught in trade disputes with China. Construction of the plant, near Evansville just south of Madison, was expected to begin within weeks of that announcement, with completion targeted for fall 2028\. The facility is designed to crush 80 million bushels of U.S.-grown soybeans a year, yielding about 1 billion pounds of oil and 2 million tons of meal annually, and is expected to employ roughly 80 people.

CHS is making the commitment on behalf of its member-owners, who include Kansas growers.

The National Oilseed Processors Association characterized the project as one of the first new U.S. soy crush plants to break ground in recent years, after a wave of announced projects stalled amid uncertainty over federal biofuel policy and renewable diesel demand. Industry investment in crushing has been driven by demand for soybean oil in renewable diesel production and by interest in domestic markets less exposed to foreign buyers.

CHS said it chose the Evansville site for its proximity to soybean acreage, rail service and highway corridors. For growers in the Upper Midwest, a crush plant inside the region shortens hauling distances.
