Canton residents can comment on the city's budget at a revenue-neutral-rate hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 — the session Kansas law requires when a city plans to collect more property tax than last year.

According to a notice the posted by city Aug. 25 — about two weeks before the hearing — the session will be held in the City Council Room at 100 S. Main St. The revenue-neutral rate is the mill levy that would raise the same dollar amount of property tax as the prior year; the hearing requirement dates to a [2021 state transparency law](https://sos.ks.gov/publications/Register/Volume-40/Issues/Issue%2013/04-01-21-48987.html?ref=citizenjournal.us).

Canton's earlier budget notices, including its 2025 notice, indicate the hearing has been a standard part of the city's annual budget cycle rather than an exceptional step.
