MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson Bullpups varsity girls volleyball team closed out their season at the Class 4A state tournament, falling to Paola, Andale and Bishop Miege in a grueling day of competition that ultimately saw Andale and Bishop Miege finish as the top two teams in the state. Against Paola, the Bullpups led 23-20 with three set points in hand before dropping the opening set by two, and they never found footing in the second set; Andale dominated their match, and Bishop Miege — having adjusted their lineup after early struggles — neutralized both McPherson's offense and defense. "Those two losses were to the best two teams in the tournament," head coach Christy Doile said. "There is some comfort in knowing the losses were to quality opponents. Proud of our season and the growth we made." The day carried added weight as Doile and the program said goodbye to seniors Carmin Pavlovich, Rylie Whitfield and Lily Vance — with Whitfield reaching 2,500 career assists during the Paola match — and as Doile noted, "It was a great experience to see our Bullpup community and school support VB on Thursday. It means a lot to the players and coaches to see the support from their classmates, families, school staff and town."
